As expected
I am stunned at the other reviews of this book because this book offers excellent technical information and is written for the average person to get a really good understanding of EPUB 3. One of the many hats I wear as a publisher is writing software that makes authorship easier. Here is a book designed to make an author's formatting job easier and is well worth the investment.
I thought I'd expand my awareness of technologies I didn't know about when I saw these "What Is" thingamabobs come up on my app. I downloaded some and was completely underwhelmed. While the material was informative, for the trouble, I would rather just use Wikipedia. Besides, firing up my app on the android takes over a minute - so I only open it for serious reading. I guess if you don't have a device with WiFi or internet, maybe these things are useful, but when I have the other options, I've decided against trying more of these type of booklets out.
Dense and non-didactic. Not for beginners. Little background info.
Since I am not knowledgeable in the subject of those file formats, it was vey useful, although a bit technical.
I recommend it.
What is EPUB3 is a basic introduction to that latest epub format and what it supports. At least its basic from a technical standpoint. If you are not already conversant in, at very least, the names of some of the common programming languages and what they do, you will likely get lost quickly in this book. If names like HTML, CSS, Javascript throw you for a loop, avoid this book. If not dive in, it's a pretty thorough book. It's like a lot of the "In a Nutshell" books I have read in that regard. If you have some technical savvy they are good quick descriptions of new technologies but the average indie author wanting to know what is meant when they see an "epub3" book format will need something more basic then this.
Thank you Mr. Garrish for making that information available in format. The EPub3 standard has many exciting features that I am sure we will be seeing more of over time. Multimedia overlays and adaptive content are the two I find the most intriguing. The do-it-once philosophy of EPub3 is very attractive.
